Spirit of Detroit Award - Major Taylor Michigan

On October 15, 2026, the Detroit City Council presented Major Taylor Michigan Cycling Advocacy with the Spirit of Detroit Award, recognizing our work to help Detroit students get to school safely by bike.

The Spirit of Detroit Award is presented as an expression of the gratitude and esteem of the citizens of Detroit for outstanding achievement or service to the city. Our certificate carries the official City of Detroit seal and the image of The Spirit of Detroit, and is signed by all nine members of the Detroit City Council, including Council President James Tate.

The award recognizes our donation and installation of fifteen custom bike racks at Noble Elementary-Middle School through our Operation: Rack and Roll program. The racks provide thirty secure bicycle parking spaces for students, staff, and visitors.

The City Council also recognized our work connecting Noble to the Joe Louis Greenway as a Safe Route to School. By helping students use the Greenway and giving them a secure place to park when they arrive, we aim to reduce transportation barriers that contribute to chronic school absenteeism.

For an organization dedicated to serving Detroit, recognition from the city we serve is especially meaningful. We are grateful to Council Member Scott Benson and the Detroit City Council for this honor, and to the school leaders, community partners, volunteers, and supporters who help make this work possible.

Major Taylor Michigan Cycling Advocacy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that exists to reduce transportation insecurity in Detroit. Our programs help children learn to ride, earn their own bikes, and develop the skills to ride safely. We also help working adults access bicycles for their commute. Together, these efforts make cycling a practical way to get to school and work, and a sport people can enjoy throughout their lives.

This recognition encourages us to keep going. Our goal is to bring bike racks to every DPSCD school along the Joe Louis Greenway so more students have a secure place to park and a dependable way to get to class.

Your support helps make that possible. Donate today to help provide bikes, safe places to park, and riding and safety education for more Detroit students.
