Stride & Glide

Learning to ride starts with balance. We bring the bikes to the classroom.

Stride & Glide brings pedal-free balance bikes into PreK through third-grade classrooms, giving young students riding practice and an assessment before they move on.

Marco teaching stride and glide

Every child needs a place to start riding.

One in three Detroit households has no car. A riding lesson across town can mean another trip to arrange. Children need time on a bike before riding can become part of how they get around. For a young child, that starts with learning balance. Putting that practice in the classroom gives them a place to begin during the school day.

Stride & Glide puts that first practice where children already learn. Our classroom pilot at Noble reached roughly 180 kids across about six classes. Each child is assessed before being marked ready to move on, so the next step follows their progress. Your support brings that practice into the school day, giving young riders a start they can build on as they learn traffic skills, earn a bike and begin riding to school.

Start with balance in the classroom

Stride & Glide starts the youth pathway with balance practice. Bicycle Safety Town adds traffic skills, Earn a Bike adds a bike to keep, and Operation Rack & Roll and Bike Bus support the ride to school.

How Stride & Glide works

Bring bikes into class

Stride & Glide brings pedal-free Strider balance bikes into classrooms for children in PreK through third grade.

Practice for 30 minutes

Each classroom session lasts 30 minutes, giving young riders dedicated time to practice on pedal-free balance bikes.

Leave setup to us

Schools have no equipment setup to handle and pay nothing for the classroom sessions that donors support.

Check each rider's progress

Each child is assessed and marked ready to move on, so their next step follows their progress.

Your gift pays for classroom sessions with pedal-free bikes, giving young students time to practice and learn.
