Operation Rack & Roll

A kid won't ride to school if there's nowhere to lock up the bike.

Operation Rack & Roll installs permanent bike racks at schools along the Joe Louis Greenway, giving students a place to lock up their bikes.

Bike racks at Noble Middle Schools

A ride to school needs a place to park.

A bike cannot be a practical ride to school without a place to leave it. One in three Detroit households has no car, so making a bike usable for everyday trips matters. Students can learn to ride and keep a bike in working order. They still need somewhere to lock it up when they get to class. School bike parking connects the ride to the school day.

Rack & Roll starts with permanent racks where school staff can see them. Our first installation at Noble Elementary-Middle School added 15 racks and 30 spaces in August 2026. Each rack is powder-coated green and cut with the Major Taylor rider. The plan is to reach every DPSCD school along the Greenway. Later phases include showers, indoor bike rooms and repair corners. Your gift helps give the next school a place for its students' bikes.

Give the ride a place to end

Operation Rack & Roll provides the parking a school needs before it can host a Bike Bus. Students who learn to ride and earn a bike need somewhere to lock it up when they arrive.

How Rack & Roll works

Install permanent racks

Custom-made racks go into the ground at schools, giving students a permanent place to lock up their bikes.

Keep parking in view

Racks sit where school staff can see them, keeping bike parking within view during the school day.

Build racks for schools

Each rack is powder-coated green and cut with the Major Taylor rider, making the school installation easy to recognize.

Reach Greenway schools

The plan is to install racks at every DPSCD school along the Joe Louis Greenway, preparing schools for bike buses.

Your gift helps pay for permanent bike racks at a school along the Greenway, where students can lock up.
