Bicycle Safety Town

Knowing how to pedal is the start. Traffic skills come next.

Bicycle Safety Town gives riders ages 7 and up a place to practice traffic skills in a simulated streetscape at the Michigan Science Center.

Teaching bike safety

Give kids a place to practice before riding in traffic.

Kids can know how to pedal and still need practice reading a sign or deciding when to yield. Bicycle Safety Town gives riders ages 7 and up a place to work through those decisions. Traffic skills matter on the trip to school and around the neighborhood. A rider needs practice with the signs and signals that help people share a street before relying on those skills to get around.

Bicycle Safety Town uses a simulated streetscape at the Michigan Science Center to make traffic lessons concrete. Riders can connect a hand signal or a sign to a decision they make on the bike. The pilot gives Major Taylor Michigan a way to make the case for a permanent facility. Your support pays for school sessions now and helps show why Detroit needs a lasting place for young riders to practice.

Add traffic skills to the ride

Bicycle Safety Town adds traffic practice after the balance work of Stride & Glide. Earn a Bike, Operation Rack & Roll and Bike Bus connect those skills to bike ownership and the trip to school.

How Safety Town works

Practice in a streetscape

Riders ages 7 and up use a simulated streetscape at the Michigan Science Center to practice traffic skills.

Make time for practice

Each school session lasts one hour, setting aside time for riders to work on the decisions they make in traffic.

Learn the street skills

Riders practice hand signals, reading signs, scanning, yielding and riding etiquette as part of the school session.

Practice with supplied equipment

Trek supplies much of the equipment used in Safety Town, helping make the simulated streetscape available for school sessions.

Your gift pays for school sessions at the Michigan Science Center, where young riders practice traffic skills.
